A Little Perspective When You Feel Discouraged

Have you ever looked out the window of an airplane? Soaring above the clouds looking down at the earth below. It’s amazing how small everything looks from up there. From the Empire State Building to the Grand Canyon they all seem tiny and not as monumentous when staring down at them from 30,000 feet.
Abraham, Noah, Paul, King David and our forefathers never got to see this view. They didn’t have the opportunity to see the vastness of the Earth God created. Yet I sit here in a small seat above the clouds looking out over the beauty of God’s creation and wonder if He sees it this way. I know, I know not a very sound theological thought. I mean God is omnipresent right? So can you imagine Him looking down from our atmosphere and seeing how small our country seems. Or looking at Earth from space and realizing the whole world can be held in His hands! Or, wait for it, looking down from the heavens and seeing the entire universe, galaxy and seeing that we are just a blip in the Lord’s timeline.
And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.
When I remember who God is I am reminded who I am in comparison. I am a spec of dust and can’t even be seen from 30,000 feet. Yet the Lord sees me, He even knows how many hairs are on my head. If he cares about the lilies of the field when they will die tomorrow how much more does he care for me. And if he can see that much detail throughout all our known galaxy our problems don’t seem too large for such a God as this.
So the next time I sing “He’s got the whole world in His hand’s” I will remember that He actually does.
