Norimoto Iino: Dōgen 's Zen View of Interdependence Dōgen had an all-encompassing, many-sided view of interdependence (parasparāpeksā). This is a lovely article, eloquent and a joy to read. Highly recommended T. P. Kasulis: The Zen Philsopher: a review article on Dōgen scholarship in English : Kasulis begins by arguing that Zen can be interpreted through philosophical enquiry and goes on to review some major works of translation of Dogen. This article was originally published in 1978 in Philosophy East and West, Volume 28, no. 3, July so the reviews are limited (showing how much has changed since then in Dogen studies) but it's still worth reading. Recommended. Taigen Dan Leighton: The Lotus Sutra as a Source for Dōgen 's Discourse Style Leighton discusses Dōgen's appropriation of the Lotus Sutra at a rhetorical device in the Shobogenzo and other writings of Dogen. Reflections on Translating Dogen : Leighton talks of the joy of discovering (and translating) Dōgen. originally published in Dharma Eye, October 2001 Zazen as an Enactment Ritual : "Buddhist meditation has commonly been considered an instrumental technique aimed at obtaining a heightened mental or spiritual state, or even as a method for inducing some dramatic “enlightenment” experience. " However, Dōgen doesn't see zazen this way. As Muck says, Dogen "offers the seeds of fruitful ideas for a way forward: beyond rationalism, without rancor, toward a true ecumenism of the human spirit." Koan Collections Mumonkan (The Gateless Gate): a complete translation of the 48 cases translated by Katsui Sekida, complete with Japanese characters is available here . Another translation, translated as " The Gateless Checkpoint ", by Gregory Wonderwheel, is also available. Ishii Shūdō & Albert Welter look at the formation and history of The Wu-men kuan (J. Mumonkan) The Formation, Propagation, and Characteristics of a Classic Zen Kōan Text is an excellent essay for those interested in the history of this text. Shoyo Roku (The Book of Serenity) This is the other great classic koan collection, along with the Mumonkan. One hundred cases, some of which show up in the Mumonkan as well, were reassembled (after being lost) by Wansong. This version does not contain anything other than the cases themselves nor does it acknowledge who the translator was. However, it can still serve a function. Thomas Cleary's translation (The Book of Serenity, Lindisfarne Press) is still the standard complete version in English. Shaseki-shu : (Collection of Stone and Sand), written late in the thirteenth century by the Japanese Zen teacher Muju (the "non-dweller"), and from anecdotes of Zen monks taken from various books published in Japan around the turn of the 20th century. Over 100 translations here. Zen Flesh, Zen Bones : by Paul Reps and Nygen Sensaki an online version of the stories under the title 101 Zen Stories. Does not include excerpts of the Mumonkan or the 10 Bulls, both of which are in the original book. This edition has only 65 stories. The stories are not really koans in the classical sense although some can be used as koans to aid awakening. The stories come from the Collection of Stone and Sand (see above) Zen Koans by Ven. It includes a reference list of koan commentaries, a variety of definitions and a bibliography of koan studies. Some of the commentaries have links to the appropriate site. This site is worth the time it takes to explore. Koan Commentaries and Study Carl Hooper: Koan Zen and Wittgenstein’s Only Correct Method in Philosophy Koan Zen is a philosophical practice that bears a strong family resemblance to Wittgenstein’s approach to philosophy.Both koan Zen and Wittgenstein’s method set limits to the reach of philosophical discourse. Each rules metaphysical speculation out of bounds. Neither, however, represents a rejection of the metaphysical. Where Wittgenstein enjoins silence in the face of the unsayable, a silence that allows the metaphysical to show itself, koan Zen calls for concrete demonstrations of that which cannot be captured in rational discourse. Fisher: An Analysis Of The Koans In The Mu Mon Kwan Fisher looks at the Mumonkan and breaks the koans down into catagories, finding that although the koans differ, the message is the same: "...the way to satori is not through dependence upon words, even if they be words of the Buddha or past Masters; however, one should not reject words, for, imperfect as they are, they are the only means we have of attaining enlightenment. They should use the words and ideas contained in the koans to reach satori, but they should never confuse the two. " Kusumoto Bunyū: Zengo Nyūmon (An Introduction to Zen Words and Phrases) translated by Michael D Ruymar. This text consists of 100 words and phrases selected by Dr. Kusumoto for exegesis from a variety of sources, but particularly from classic kōan collections like the Blue Cliff Record, the Gateless Barrier, and the Book of Serenity, as well as from the collected writings or sayings of renowned Zen Masters from both China and Japan, like Zen Masters Linji and Dōgen, or, again, from the poetry of such as Han Shan (Cold Mountain) and others. A useful guide in conjunction with Victor Sogen Hori's Zen Sand: The Book of Capping Phrases for Koan Practice . (see below) Mary Jaksch: The Road to Nowhere: Koans and Deconstruction of the Zen Saga Jaksch is a Zen teacher in the Diamond Sangha. This is her M. A. thesis on koans. She looks at "mind-to-mind" transmission, the historicity of koans and how koans are used in practice. Her website is here . Victor Sogen Hori has written a book of capping phrases (jakugo) for koans. The introduction to the book , which discusses extensively the history of koans and jakugo, is available for free download here. Hajime Nakamura: The Non-Logical Character of Zen Nakamura sees koans as "paradoxes which transcend the opposites" where "human existence is implicitly expressed". Are koans really paradoxes? An interesting, if a bit dense, article. from Philosophy East and West Volume 33, no.2, 1983 Heinrich Dumoulin: Early Chinese Zen Reexamined: This is a supplementary essay to Doumoulin's seminal work, Zen Buddhism: A History and gives an overview of the Tung-Huaung manuscripts of the early years of Bodhidharma and the beginnings of Zen in China which Dumoulin didn't include in the early editions of his book. see also: two Introductions to Dumoulin's opus, Zen History — one written by Victor Hori and the other by John McRae Faxian: Faxian (Fa-hsien) on Buddhist Kingdoms, ca. 400 translated by James Legge This is a very short excerpt that talks about some of the places Faxian (4th-5th C), one of the earliest Chinese to visit India, visited. from UCLA Center for East Asian Studies Andy Ferguson: Zen Ancestors in China Lineage Chart Author of Zen's Chinese Heritage: The Masters and Their Teachings includes this lineage chart of the 5 Houses of Chinese Zen in his book. The Bright Field of Spirit: The Life and Teachings of Chan Master Hongzhi Zhengjue : Gidin explores the life and teachings of one of the giants of the Caodong (Soto) school and he discusses Honghzhi's relationship with his critic, Dahui Zonggao of the Linji school. Peter Gregory: The Sudden/Gradual Polarity: A Recurrent Theme In Chinese Thought Gregory summarizes the papers presented at on "The Sudden/Gradual Polarity: A Recurrent Theme in Chinese Thought" during the weekend of May 22-24, 1981. from Journal Of Chinese Philosophy Vol.9 1982 Victor Soren Hori: Zen Sand - Introduction This is the entire 97-page introduction to Hori's book. It deals with the use of koans and capping phrases in Rinzai practice. This is fabulous! Well worth reading if you're interested in koan study. Highly recommended. Victor Hori's personal account of translating Zen Sand is also of interest and was written before the book was published. My review of this book is here . Introduction --- Zen History, Vol. 2 : This is Hori's introduction to Dumoulin's second volume of Zen History. An interesting essay. Linda Brown Holt: From India to China: Transformations in Buddhist Philosophy Holt examines how Buddhism transformed when it left India and entered China. The two diverse languages had a significant role in the transformation. Scott Hurley: The Doctrinal Transformation of 20th Century Chinese Buddhism: Master Yinshun's interpretation of the tathagatagarbha doctrine Hurley looks at Master Yinshun's (b. 1906) understanding of the tathagataharbha and concludes that this doctrine is 'expedient means' teaching. Hurley gives a good explanation of the doctrine and contrasts it with Nagarjuna's Mulamadhyamakakarika doctrine of emptiness. Well worth reading. from Contemporary Buddhism, Vol. 5, No. 1, 2004 Ven. Levering: The Dragon Girl and the Abbess of Mo-Shan: Gender and Status in the Ch'an Buddhist Tradition Levering looks at the attitude towards women in the Ch'an (and Zen) tradition. While some thought women incapable of full enlightenment, masters such as Ta-hui Tsung-kao and Dogen disagreed with this assertion. from The Journal Of The International Association Of Buddhist Studies, Vol 5, No. 1, 1982 Michael P Levine: Can the Concept of Enlightenment Evolve? Clark John Maraldo: Is There Historical Consciousness Within Chan? Much of Ch'an history was written for reasons other than historical accuracy. Maraldo looks at some interpretations of modern historians of Ch'an and believes we should "identify the interests of the contemporary historian before seeking a direct answer [about historicity] in the sources being studied." " from: Chung-Hwa Buddhist Journal, No.7, pp.449~473(1994) Jan Nattier: The Heart Sutra: A Chinese Apocryphal Text? Nattier explores the origins of the Heart Sutra, one of the most important Buddhist texts. He concludes that this text was translated from the Chinese to Sanskrit rather than the other way round. from The Journal of the Interntional Association of Buddhist Studies, Vol 15, No. 2 1992 Eshin Nishimura: Practical Principle Of Hakuin Zen Examined in the Text By His Disciple Tourei-Enji : the title says it all. Gudo Nishijima: Japanese Buddhism and the Meiji Restoration : Nishijima discusses the effects of the Meiji Restoration on Japanese Buddhism. Includes Nishijima's introduction to Nagarjuna's Mulamadhyamakakarika, which Nishijima claims is "identical to the theories of Dogen". Kang-nam Oh: The Taoist Influence on Hua-yen Buddhism: A Case of the Sinicization of Buddhism in China . "The religio-philosophical system presented by the Hua-yen Buddhist school of China was characteristically "Chinese" in the sense that it was not merely extensions of Indian Buddhist ideas but the reinterpretations and restatements of Buddhist thought within distinctively Chinese modes of thought and expression. Hua-yen, in this sense, was a "sinicized" Buddhism. The paper argues that the Taoist philosophy was one, possibly the most important, influence on this process. This treatise illustrates the Huayan Doctrine through the medium of the golden lion in Her Majesty's palace. Zoketsu Norman Fischer: (as well as others of the Everyday Zen Foundation ), former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center. There are dozens of talks here by someone who studied at the SFZC for nearly 30 years. Ruben Habito, from the MKZC in Texas, offers up some talks and teishos . Habito is from the Yasutani lineage. The list is organized according to various topics similar to thezensite topics to help you navigate around. Although nobody can (or should try to) list all the Zen books available, I think this list goes some way to helping both scholars and students a place to begin. Steven Heine's A Critical Survey of Works on Zen since Yampolsky An excellent survey of significant writings on Zen Buddhist studies since 1967. Includes a very useful bibliography of articles, books, monographs and theses of significant works. Highly recommended. AMA Samy's Book recommendations : a reading list which includes Zen, meditation and psychology. Includes links to some book reviews. The list can be downloaded as a pdf document. Chapel Hill Zen Center recommended reading list. This group is led by Pat Phelan and is associated with Suzuki's San Francisco Zen Center. Clouds in Water Zen Center : has an extensive recommended reading list. Clouds in Water center in St Paul, Minnesota is in the Dainin Katagiri lineage. Dr. Ron Epstein's reading list for his "philosophy 501" university course. An interesting list with a great variety of readings. Books academics would read but of interest to Zen students. Kenyon College in Ohio has an extensive Zen bibliography here as part of their Religious Study programme. The Kwan Um School of Zen recommended reading list. An extensive reading list which includes books by their master, Seung Sahn, books on Korean Zen, other Zen traditions, koan studies and sutras. Very comprehensive. John Daido Loori has an extensive reading list here . Liverpool Zen Group : an extensive (and eclectic) collection of recommended readings. Unstructured Buddhist Bibliography : this site has over 3,000 Buddhist books listed, many with links to Amazon. It's just in alphabetical order so I don't know how one is to use this list. But here it is and I have no idea why an insurance company would publish such a list. Book Sources Everyone knows about Amazon but here are some other sources that may not be as well known. Saujanya Books : based in New Delhi, this bookseller specialises in Tibetan, Buddhist, Muslim texts as well as other topics. It lists about 1855 Buddhist books alone. It distributes books in English, Sanskrit and Tibetan. And the prices, which include airmail shipping, are considerably cheaper than Amazon. Worthy of a browse. You be the judge. Ken Knabb: Strong Lessons for Engaged Buddhists : A critique of the so-called "engaged Buddhist" movement. Is it true that "engaged Buddhists' social awareness has remained extremely limited. If they have begun to recognize certain glaring social realities, they show little understanding of their causes or possible solutions"? Following on from this 1993 essay, Knabb returns in 1999 with Evading the Transformation of Reality: Engaged Buddhism at an Impasse, continuing the call for a more radical engagement by Buddhists. The Aitken-Shimano Letters by Vladimir K. and Stuart Lachs: based on letters held in the Robert Aitken Archives at the University of Hawaii, this article explores how Eido Shimano, abbot of the New York baseed Zen Studies Society, has been accused of sexual misadventures for over 30 years yet has never been investigated and continues to recieve support from some American Zen teachers. letter to Richard Rudin , President of Board of Directors, Zen Studies Society, 1995, by eight American Zen masters regarding Eido Shimano Roshi Mark Oppenheimer: a lengthy excerpt from his ebook, The Zen Predator of the Upper East Side has been added to The Aitken_Shimano Letters essay. Zen and War: a film review by Vladimir K. This is a film review of Alexander Oey's, 2009 Buddhist Broadcasting Foundation of the Netherlands documentary which asks a number of Zen teachers about Japanese Zen Buddhism's support of the Asia-Pacific War. This is an ajunct to Brian Victoria's work on exposing Japanese Zen Buddhism's support for war. Stuart Lachs: Tibetan Buddhism Enters the 21st Century: Trouble in Shangri-la: Stuart moves from looking at Zen Buddhism to Tibetan Buddhism. In this paper he outlines some of the abuses of the Tibetan system. "For followers of Tibetan Buddhism in the West at least, the day-to-day results have been the same as that of the Zen sect of Buddhism. In the Tibetan case, students’ absolute submission to the teacher has led to some teachers amassing extravagant wealth, and almost always to wild sexual abuse, arguably even more extreme than in Zen Buddhist communities." (this link will take you off thezensite page) For Whose Best Interest : Joshu Sasaki (April 1, 1907 – July 27, 2014) was one of the leading Zen teachers in America. But all was not as it seemed. "Sasaki initiated sexual encounters with between 100 and 300 female students.The women, often in their early twenties, were searching for direction and meaning in their lives, naïve about Zen teachings, history and Zen masters while Sasaki was presented as a mature, enlightened Zen master beyond their understanding. " When the Saints Go Marching In: Modern Day Zen Hagiography: Stuart looks at two biographies of contemporary Zen masters, Sheng Yen and Walter Nowick. Stuart has personal knowledge of both masters and discovered that hagiography is alive and well in modern Zen biographies. The Zen Master in America: Dressing the Donkey with Bells and Scarves Lachs looks at the myth of Dharma transmission in the context of American Zen and asks, Does the reality of modern Zen match the traditional view of what a Zen master should be? This is an important essay by Lachs and should be read by all Zen students.
